False praise

I think that it’s completely natural for us to want to help when we see someone who has got particularly low self-esteem. But unfortunately, we don’t realise that our response can sometimes be too short-term to make a difference.

If we only praise for praise’s sake their self-esteem will drop even further. They will see through our false praise and no longer believe a word we utter in praise, no matter how true it might be.

We must be careful when deciding which words to speak.
