We all question whether we’ll know what to say if a close friend opens up to us. We wonder whether we’ll be able to say the words that shows them comfort and support. But we’re overthinking it. We make it more difficult than it needs to be.
This conversation, if it ever arises, is not about us – it’s about them. Sometimes we just need the chance to talk to someone without them saying anything back in return. A chance to offload, to confide in them the thoughts and worries that weigh us down.
My advice would be to not go searching for those special words that will suddenly heal their pain. Just listen. Give them a chance to say what they are so desperately in need of saying.
